John Ross Elementary School Reviews

This is our first year at John Ross but love it so far we have had no falling outs and the kids seem to all be well adjusted unlike our boys old school who had lots of bullying and the teachers screamed and yelled all the time treating them like they were in prison or boot camp. John Ross is a breath of fresh air compared and they have learned so much. I don't know why any parent would be griping about not having homework???? That just shows the teachers are doing there jobs and helping the kids get it done at school and not overloading them, its a good thing that we aren't having to do the teachers jobs.

Our children have been at John Ross for the past four years and my husband and I are extremely pleased with their progress. The teachers are great to work with and they really challenge our children. My kids have reading homework every night and math, social studies, and science throughout the week. We have found the staff very helpful and professional. I have volunteered there for two years and have always felt welcome and appreciated for my efforts. Our kids are learning and thriving at John Ross.

When I took a position in OKC we chose Edmond solely because the schools were said to be the best in the state. I believe many who move to the area from out of state will be suprised by Edmond Schools. Although I understand they are not bad and very good for the area - like the road construction methods here - the methodology and style of learning used in this school system is 10yrs + behind some of the neighboring states. It is like steeping back in time where many of the teachers raise their voices (yell) and expect young children to be perfectly still while standing in a line. Those who are extremely happy with this system have not experienced more modern positive reinforcement systems. (They actually work extremely well.)

This school does not challenge my children. My 2nd grader has not had a single item of homework the entire school year so far. We moved here from another state and John Ross (or Edmond schools maybe?) has not caught up to my kids yet this year. Very disappointing! Also, the woman that works the front counter in the office is horribly rude and I'm not the only parent to say this. We will not be there next year. Sad they are losing me, because I don't work and have not felt welcome to volunteer in the classroom or the school even after asking several times. Can't wait for this year to be over!

Our experience has been quite different from the last reviewer. My child has had an excellent experience at John Ross. The teachers have been fabulous and my child is far above grade level on all testing. Ms. Walter, the enrichment teacher, has been very good. Enrichment has really challenged my child to grow intellectually. The principal is very impressive and the teachers are very dedicated. The future holds really good things for this school.

This school is wonderful. My oldest went from not even slightly reading at PC duriing the first semester of kindergarten to reading very well at the end of kindergarten, I frimly believe that it is because of JR teachers/faculty..

John Ross Elementary School is a great learning environment. Programs are available to keep students interested in math and science. Teahcer to student rato is good. Parental participation is a valuable asset and helps out the faculty in many areas.

I have found that speaking with the Assistant Principal this year has fallen on deaf ears. I am very unhappy with the lack of follow through. We have had a handful of wonderful teachers. We have only had one that is far from great.

Both of my students have attended John Ross Elementary. I have experienced other Edmond Schools, and by far John Ross is the most welcoming school in Edmond. THey accept each student for who they are and what they can contribute!

The fellow parents, Teachers, and other staff at this school are wonderful. My son transferred her from another school after he was diagnosed with Autism in April of his Kindergarten year. I feel so welcomed everytime I go into the school. All of my sons teachers are so patient with my son yet also encourage him to learn....he has made AMAZING progress! The faculty is nothing short of miracle workers.

My husband and I both are impressed with this school and the quality of teachers it provides. We switched from [another school] due to a recent move and were concerned because of our son being on an I.E.P The transition was smooth and we received the support he needed without any delay. This was a great relief to us. This schools main concern is the education, safety and well-being of it's students and I have to say that John Ross meets and even exceeds the responisibility very well.

As a parent, I am not impressed with John Ross. My daughter is a Kindergartener and though the socialization was good for her, I was disappointed with the level of learning. She wasn't challenged academically whatsoever. The curriculum allowed no customization to her skill level. Our teacher was wonderful, but the school as a whole felt very cold and unwelcoming to me. I felt that with the way the school was operated, rules were so tight that parents ended up being treated like children. What happened to a warm, welcoming environment?

I think this is a pretty good school!

I attended John Ross over 20 years ago and knew that I wanted my own kids to attend as well. My 3rd grade son attended Will Rogers for K-2 and although I really liked it there, I enjoy John Ross as well and enjoy knowing that my son is now walking the same halls that I once walked. I think they have wonderful teachers and staff and am very exciting about my daughter starting Kindergarten there next year.

John Ross is an excellent school. My son has gone to Will Rogers, Orvis Risner and now attends John Ross. Out of these three John Ross is hands down a much better school. The staff is usually warm and helpful. The teachers are wonderful and really care about their students. There is a lot of parent teacher interactions, whether it's a school function or a note needs to be sent home(good, bad, or informative). This school is so great for students. They're far ahead with their curriculm. My son has gotten extrememly bored at his other schools, but this one is keeping his attention. It's really challenging and pushs him to be a better student/person. Way to go John Ross. :-)

I attended John Ross grades 1-5 and am now currently enrolled at Edmond North High School. My expirience with John Ross was great. We had excellent teachers that loved to teach, wonderful staff, and fun PE, Health, Music, and Art classes. Our teachers tought us the importance of respecting others, respecting yourself, and having the will to learn. We had several crafts that we made throughout the year, and had a play that the music department put on. Having music class at such a young age taught me the importance of music, and because of that, I am now in the Edmond North High School marching band. Having health and PE classes encouraged us to take care of our bodies and excercise, without being too difficult or hard to understand. The school also had a good enrichment program that got me into art and history. I had a great expirience in elementary school because what we did was fun. We also felt very safe there. We regularly practiced fire evacuations and what to do if we ever had a tornado, which is always important. I don't if the principal I had is still there now, but she was excellent and really cared about the students. Overall, I would recommend this school to anyone who wants their child to learn, have fun, and be safe all at the same time. Did I mention that they have a great playground?!
